Clinical applications of angled abutments ── a literature review

چکیده
Dental implants have been proven to be an effective way of restoring the masticatory ability to completely or partially edentulous patients. But when clinicians deal with undesirable implant orientation caused by poor bone conditions, an angled abutment is often the treatment of choice for prosthodontic restorations. A search of articles related to the success rate, stress analysis, and bone response to loading of angled abutments was performed in order to understand the rationale for their current clinical applications. Evidence shows that the clinical performance of angled abutments is comparable to that of straight abutments with respect to both soft-tissue responses and general survival rates. However, in vitro studies of stress/strain analyses of angled abutments can only agree that stress/strain levels increase as abutment angulation increases. Three analytical techniques including the photo elastic technique, strain gauge analysis, and finite element analysis have been applied for analyzing angled abutments. Further comparative studies are required using these three techniques because some quantitative aspects are still inconclusive such as how much stress is introduced upon a certain degree of abutment angulation. Effect of Abutment Angulation and Material on Stress and Strain Distributions in Premaxillary Bone: A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis
Background and Aim: Dental implants with angled abutments are often inserted in the anterior maxillary region due to the status of the residual ridge and aesthetic considerations. The purpose of this study was to assess stress and strain distributions in the premaxillary bone around dental implants by means of finite element analysis (FEA). Materials and Methods: Four three-dimensional (3D) fi...

This study was conducted to compare the success of implants restored with angled abutments to implants restored with standard abutments. Eighty-one implants in 24 patients were evaluated for up to 36 months. Measurements included probing depths, gingival level, gingival index, and mobility. No significant difference could be found for any of the parameters examined between implants restored wit...

UNLABELLED Although the use of zirconia abutments for implant-supported restorations has gained momentum with the increasing demand for esthetics, little informed design rationale has been developed to characterize their fatigue behavior under different clinical scenarios. However, to prevent the zirconia from fracturing, the use of a titanium connection in bi-component aesthetic abutments has ...
متن کاملAngulated Implants for Fabrication of Implant Supported Fixed Partial Denture in the Maxilla
Until recently, angled abutments have been the only solution to correcting the trajectory of the emergence profile of labially inclined implants in the maxilla. However, the clinical implications of angled abutments reveal several shortcomings. Newly designed angulated implants with a 12-degree restorative platform angulation are an alternative to angled abutments. The purpose of this article w...
متن کاملThe use of angulated abutments in implant dentistry: five-year clinical results of an ongoing prospective study.
A total of 2,261 2-stage implants was placed in 467 patients in combination with angled abutments ranging from 0 to 45 degrees. These were observed over a period of up to 96 months, with a mean observation time of 28.8 months. Single and multiple teeth were replaced and restored using angled abutments. For patients who contributed multiple survival data, the data were considered dependent. Ther...
